The Deesan Group is a vertical textile company located at Shirpur in North Maharashtra. It has brought tremendous progress and prosperity to this drought prone and industrially backward region.“When I took charge as President of the Shirpur Warvade Municipal Council in 1985, the condition of the town was abysmal. The roads had huge potholes, there was encroachment on Municipal land, garbage was dumped at every nook and corner - and, to make matters worse, the city suffered from severe water scarcity.
“To add to these problems the municipal council was woefully short of finance. With revenues from all sources totalling a mere Rs 47 lac, the council was hardly in a position to work an economic sea change in the city and had more or less given it up for good.
“On assuming office, I saw Shirpur's economic transformation as a personal challenge; one to be pursued with imagination and conviction. If I achieved success, it would vindicate my belief in my abilities, while opening doors to a better, more productive life for scores of marginalized rural communities.
“In envisioned Shirpur as being the hub of the largest textile complex in Central India. This enterprise would also be the largest employer in the district, generating so many job opportunities that it would make it unnecessary for any son of the soil to leave his hometown in search of employment“I began by setting up a spinning unit in 1996. It was a modest step, but in just 13 years it has taken giant leaps into becoming a full-fledged, multi-process, cotton textile manufacturing enterprise, encompassing the entire value chain – from cultivation to production of fashion wear.
“Today, the operation covers 200 acres, employs 7,500 people, and adheres to strict environment guidelines in its processes. Most importantly, it serves my vision of holistic societal development – and herein lies its special appeal.
